Geraint Thomas becomes first Briton to win Tour de Suisse

Geraint Thomas makes history as he becomes the first-ever Briton to win the Tour de Suisse. Thomas who won the Tour de France in 2018 was well ahead of his general classification rivals as Remco Evenepoel was victorious on stage eight.

Geraint Thomas when previous had his best finish ever was in the year 2015, that was the year when Thomas got the closest to the finishing line as he came second in the Tour de Suisse 2015.

Belgian Evenepoel completed the course in twenty-eight minutes and twenty-six seconds, on the other hand, Welshman Geraint Thomas was three seconds slower.

Thomas when facing Sergio Higuita his rival, got the best of him as he overtook Sergio to clinch the victory and was successful in beating Sergio Higuita by more than a minute.

Jakob Fuglsang could only close to the third even after giving his best and in an event that was spoiled by almost 30 riders, which also included four teams in it who pulled out because of the Covid-19 on the day of Friday.

Geraint Thomas’ fellow national Stephen Williams was in a leading position for the first four stages, but he was also among those forced out of the race.

Geraint Thomas’ narrow lead

The one who had a narrow lead going into the 25.6km time trial in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, was the man from Colombia, Higuita leaving Geraint Thomas as the favorite to win as something very important is up ahead, yes it is the start of the 2022  Tour de France which looms in Copenhagen on Friday, 1st of July.

Geraint Thomas came big this time as he lived up to the expectations to win the general classification by at least 1 min and 12 seconds. The 36-year-old Ineo’s Grenadiers rider finished the final stage of Switzerland’s biggest road race three seconds slower than Remco Evenepoel but it was enough to claim the overall victory.

While the Welshman began the final stage two seconds behind leader Sergio Higuita after finishing fifth on the penultimate stage but the 2018 Tour de France winner scorched around the 25.6km course to claim the spoils. Higuita managed to limit his losses sufficiently to take second overall, 1min 12sec behind Thomas and four seconds ahead of Jakob Fuglsang.

Geraint Thomas (born 25 May 1986) is a Welsh professional road racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam Ineos Grenadiers, Wales and Great Britain. He has been a regular competitor in the Tour de France and Vuelta an Espana, as well as winning stages in both events. He is the first British rider to win the Tour de Suisse, and the first Welsh rider to win a stage in the Tour de France.
